Leader Training

Initial Training

All new Cub Scout Leaders must complete BSA's Youth Protection Training (YPT). The training can be accessed online after creating an account at: my.scouting.org. Additional position-specific training can also be accessed on the same site. All leaders are encouraged to complete the position-specific training for the position they hold. A leader who completes the position training may wear the “trained” strip on his or her uniform.

Before doing the online training through the BSA website, you must first register. The website then keeps track of what training you have completed, have done partially, or still need to complete. It also allows you to print out a training certificate once you have completed the training. You should give a copy of the YPT completion certificate to the Pack Training Coordinator or Cubmaster. YPT training must be repeated at regular intervals to maintain a leadership role.

Additional Training

BALOO (Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation) Learn how to plan and run a Pack camping trip. It is necessary to have a BALOO trained person present at a Pack-sponsored camping trip. If the BALOO trained person leaves the campout, then everyone must leave. Therefore, it would be beneficial to the Pack to have more than one person trained and present at campouts.

Three Fires Training Academy You can pick one or more training classes during this all day event. Choose from many different courses -- anything from “Outdoor Cooking with Cubs” to “So You’re the New Den Leader” to “Storytelling” to “Tie Slides” -- and much more. The Training Academy features in-person training and an opportunity to network with other parents and leaders from other Packs in the area. This Academy is usually offered in the Fall. The specific date and time will be posted on the Three Fires Council website a few months in advance.

The BSA website also offers the following online training: “Climb On Safely;” “Safe Swim Defense;” “Safety Afloat;” “Staffing the District Committee;” “Trek Safely;” and “Weather Hazards.”

Once you have completed any training, submit a copy of your training cards to the Training Coordinator.
