Scout Uniforms

The purpose of the Scout Uniform is to build pride, encourage good behavior, provide a place for the proper display of badges and to identify members as part of the worldwide organization of Scouting. The blue in the uniform is for truth. The gold is for good cheer.

We unofficially refer to 2 types of uniforms:

Most information on this page relates to the "Class A" uniform.

Pack 24 requires only the official scout shirt and neckerchief to complete the Class A uniform (or the Lion t-shirt for Lions). The purchase of official Cub Scout pants, shorts, caps, belts, and socks is not required; however, scouts are welcome to wear these additional uniform pieces if desired. Scouts may also wear an optional red felt "brag vest" to display patches that are not part of the uniform. All nonstandard patches must be on a brag vest and should not be worn directly on the uniform.

Younger scouts should buy a much larger size than your Scout would currently wear for the shirt and vest. Scouts wear the same uniform shirt through at least third grade, and the same red vest until fifth grade.

We ask that all Scouts and Leaders be in complete uniform by the October Pack Meeting.

Your Den Leaders will be happy to answer any of your questions regarding Cub Scout uniforms!

Other Requirements

In addition to the uniform, each Scout will need:

Badges & Insignia (Patches)

The initial uniform insignia (patches) are the Three Fires Council shoulder patch and red pack "2" "4" numbers. The purple World Crest patch is optional, but encouraged. (It shows that your Scout is a member of the worldwide Scouting movement.)

If your Scout is going to wear a red brag vest, a round Three Fires Council patch, which should be centered on the back of the red vest, is also purchased separately. Segments that your Scout receives for participating in activities can be placed around this round patch.

As Scouts progress, they earn badges, pins, medals, and other insignia to recognize their accomplishments in Scouting. These items should be added to your Scout’s uniform after they have been earned. For questions about the placement of patches, please see the placement guides included in the back of each scout handbook or use the links above.

Where to Shop for Cub Scout Stuff

Not all locations carry all items and store hours may change. Employees at the official scout stores are trained Scout Leaders and can answer questions about uniforms and handbooks, such as "My kid's a Tiger; what do I need?"

Other Scout Shops

There are many other official Cub Scout shops in the Chicagoland area. Just search online for "Scout Store", and you will find scout stores in La Grange, Arlington Heights, downtown Chicago, and other locations. Only the two listed above are part of the Three Fires Council, which is Pack 24's Council. Shopping at those stores helps support our Council, which indirectly benefits Pack 24.  It's fine to shop at a scout store affiliated with a different Council, but you may not be able to purchase certain patches that are specific to Three Fires Council.
